Covered Square and multi-storey car park in Hernani

Hernani (Gipuzkoa). Spain.

Client: Municipality of Hernani.

In association with Construcciones Mariezcurrena.

Located on a slope, the square takes the level of its highest point and extends like a plinth over the surface occupied by the multi-storey car park. Its construction evokes the “genius loci” of the place, the material on which Hernani is built. The walls of the plinth are built in limestone from the area in large irregular blocks, forming cyclopean walls of unworked stone.

The structure is clear and essential in its construction method, similar to that of a primitive lintelled wood structure. The material, weathering steel, expresses Hernani's tradition of ironmongery, the industrial vocation of the town. It is, therefore, a modern construction, in steel and glass, which alludes to the traditions of the town, and timeless construction.
