Auditorium and Congress Centre of La Rioja

Madre de Dios, Logroño (La Rioja). Spain.

Client: Government of La Rioja.

The basic idea for the layout of the building stems from the way in which it is implanted on the land. So as to integrate it into the park and not interrupt the flow of its pathways, it was preferable to build underground but, given its proximity to the River, it was not advisable to go too deep, to avoid constructive and maintenance problems due to the level of the water table.

To combine the two extremes, a single storey was excavated and the soil that was extracted was piled around the perimeter of the hole, like a raised perimeter platform over the Park. The upper level of this platform is that of the principal floor, thus keeping the entire building slightly raised, with views over the Park, and at the same time obtaining spaces with a generous height clearance in the lower floor, without excavating excessively.
