La Rioja Court House

Logroño (La Rioja). Spain.

Client: Government of La Rioja

In association with Javier Frechilla and José Manual López Peláez

The Court House occupies the plot that used to house the military hospital. We rehabilitated the access pavilion, where the most important public services are located and, on the upper floor, the most representative bodies.

The new building is accessed through a central space with a glass roof, between the trees of the existing garden. The courtrooms are grouped around an empty space, light and pleasant for the general public. The courts are distributed on two floors, above the courtrooms, providing a vertical connection.

The other functions are set out in an extensive ground floor, with the typical strategy of a “mat-building”, with gardens in the interior patios on the roofs.

On the lower ground floor, the complementary services and the uses that must not be too visible are located, with independent access from the rear façade.
