Campo Viejo Winery - Juan Alcorta Winery

Camino de Lapuebla, Logroño (La Rioja). Spain

Client: Pernod Ricard Wine Makers

The biggest premium wine aging cellar in Europe, it has won an award for its integration with the landscape, the implementation of industrial construction systems, the great scenographic value of its indoor spaces and for its contribution to wine tourism in La Rioja.

The administrative and visitors' buildings overlook the vineyard like a château, whilst the cellar, hidden from the vineyard, is built into the hill like a work of land art.

Building the cellar underground provides the ideal conditions for making and aging wine naturally: a gravity-fed grape intake, stability of temperature and humidity, natural and gentle ventilation, tranquillity, darkness...

Building underground also brings one closer, albeit with modern methods, to the architectural experience of traditional cellars: calm, dark spaces, characterised by the shape and texture of the walls, by the limited natural light...
