Apartments for Young People, San Sebastian

El Antiguo District, San Sebastian. Spain.

Client: Donostiako Etxegintza - Municipal Public Housing Enterprise.

A sloping plot occupied by an abandoned school was the starting point for our urban project to transform it into a public space. Whilst the old building was located at the centre of the parcel, the new one is set to one side, freeing up the central space for a park.

Built along the steepest slope, the building connects the high and the low areas of the district by means of a sequence of two elevators, bridging a difference in height of 26 metres from Benta Berri square.

The apartments are located on the four upper floors and a nursery school is on the ground floor and semi-basement.

To soften its impact on the square, the building has a terraced profile. The building steps back in height with the apartments and their openings in the façade staggered.
